There are several methods you can use when opening a jump ring. Grasp both ends of the jump ring with your needle nose or flat nosed pliers and gently twist one side towards you and the other away from you.

There is also a tool that you can use which looks like a ring. There is a small slot on the top of the ring that can be used to complete the twisting motion to open the jump ring.
