Pearl Ribbon Necklace
For a pearl necklace similar to this one, you will need:
Potato Pearls. The pearls will need to be at least 7mm to make this necklace. Eleven pearls were used to make this necklace (a few extra are good in case you make a mistake).
3mm to 7mm satin ribbon without a wire.
Simple Instructions:
The holes in the pearls are much smaller than the ribbon so you will need to drill some new holes...
Start by picking out around eleven pearls you would like to use.
Fix your drill with a sharp 1/16 inch drill bit.
Clamp one pearl, hole up, in a vise (clamp). You need to have a bit of closed cell foam or a thick piece of felt between the pearl and the vise so you don't scratch the pearl (see picture below).
Hold the drill horizontally (see picture below), and slowly begin to drill where the original hole is. The original hole should be a guide for the drill. Also you need a variable speed drill will allow you to go slow enough as to not blow out the hole in the pearl.
Once the surface of the pearl is drilled it is fine to start to drill faster through the rest of the pearl, but once you get to the bottom of the pearl slow down again (this will make the hole smoother).
When the pearl is drilled all the way through unclamp it and do the next one until all the pearls are drilled. if the drill starts to chip the bottom of the pearl change the drill bit for one that is sharper.
Once all of the pearls are drilled rinse them off to remove any excess 'pearl dust'.
Next cut the length off ribbon you want (make sure to cut it longer than how long you want the final product). Cut the end of the ribbon at an angle to make it easier to string the pearls on.
String on all of the pearls about an inch apart.
Leave about 2 inches between the last two pearls then tie a small knot at the end of the ribbon so the pearls don't slip off.
Slightly melt the end of the ribbon so that it doesn't fray.
There is no need for a clasp, just tie a bow between the last two pearls.
Notes:
This necklace can also be worn as a hair bow, headband, or wrapped around the wrist twice for a bracelet.
