Magpie Necklace

Magpies like to "collect" shiny things, and so do I! The inspiration for this necklace was the lost treasure feel of the random leftovers in my beadbox (and pairing it with the bracelet)! Use your favorite "leftovers" to make a Magpie Necklace of your own! Created by Morgan Newberg of Leopard Stripes.

Instructions:

  1. Attach one of the folding copper ends with loop to one end of the leather.
  2. Attach a Copper End Cap for Beadalon to one end of the Beadalon, cover with a Copper Crimp Cover.
  3. Attach the end of the Beadalon, using a jump ring, to ~4" piece of the Copper Fine Cable Chain.
  4. Measure to the approximate center of the Beadalon and mark it with a permanent marker.
  5. Start stringing beadalon with alternating moonstone and 3mm copper beads, throwing in an occasional colored faceted gemstone bead (I used amethyst, apatite, & garnet, however, you should use your favorite colors). Stop when you reach the center mark.
  6. String 5-7 copper rondelle beads on the Greek leather. These will be moderately difficult to get onto the leather, I had to cut the leather at an angle to do so. The tight fit keeps the beads from sliding around too much and gives the leather and abacus-type feel.
  7. Take all 3 strands (Copper Light Curb Chain, Copper Fine Cable Chain, & the Greek Black Leather with the Crimp end attached) and slide the fancy copper bail onto them. The copper bail should be big enough to fit over the chain, leather, and some of the beads on the Beadalon strand. It's ok if it slides past the middle, you can readjust it when you're finished!
  8. Finish stringing the Beadalon alternating copper beads, moonstone, & colored beads. Don't forget to slide that copper vine tube & the 6mm Copper Decorated Round beads in someplace random!
  9. Attach other Copper End Cap for Beadalon to the Beadalon and snip off excess.
  10. Attach the other end of the Beadalon strand to the remaining 4" of Copper Fine Cable Chain with a Jump Ring.
  11. String 5-7 more copper rondelle beads on the Greek leather (however many you did on the first side).
  12. Attach folding copper crimp end to the other end of the leather.
  13. Attach leatherCopper Fine Cable Chain, & Copper Curb Chain to the split ring, attach split ring to one side of the trailer hitch clasp.
  14. Repeat with the other side and attach to the trailer hitch clasp.
  15. Using the long Copper Headpin, attach your Aquamarine Smooth Pear directly to the bail.

**Please note that all designs used for tutorials are intended to inspire. We may run out of any/all products used in a given project. Most of our designs contain products that are easily substituted. We do not intend for anyone to copy these designs exactly.
***The inspiration for this necklace was actually found in cleaning out my bead box (and matching the Magpie Bracelet). I decided to string my favorite colors randomly together from beads I used in old projects so it would look like lost treasure.
****Chunky, organic-looking jewelry is all the rage in the summer, and this is a fun way to accessorize your simple, breezy summer style!
