Beaded Hair Wrap Tutorial

Here's a simple and quick way to dress up a pony tail! You can make a short version of this wrap to wrap a small section of hair - or make a matched set for multiple wraps.

Beaded Hair Wrap

For a beaded hair wrap similar to this one, you will need:

  • 1 yard of Thin Polyester (waxed, 0.8mm) Cord. This will make a finished wrap that is about 18" long. We picked the "Light Blue" for this example.
  • 1 package of 6/0 Seed Beads (you will have beads left over). We picked "Pink Pearl" for this example.
  • Other beads for the ends of the wrap - beads need to have holes that are about 1mm to be able to fit on the cord. We used beads from India Fancy Rose & Pink Mix.

Tools you will need:

Simple Instructions:

  • Fold the cord in half.
  • Insert the short piece of stranded wire or thread in the loop made by the cord and fold the wire so that the ends are the same length. See Figure 1 for clarification.
  • Insert both ends of the wire into a 6/0 seed bead. Pull the bead down until it slips over the folded cord.
  • String the rest of the 6/0 beads that you need for your hair wrap. For a wrap that is 18" in finished length, you will need about 12-16 beads. All the beads can be in a bunch near the folded end of the cord. Once you have strung all the 6/0 beads, you may remove the piece of wire.
  • String some beads (for decoration) near the bottom of each loose end of cord. After stringing the last bead, tie a half hitch knot about 3/4" from the bottom of each loose end.
  • To keep the ends of the cord from fraying, you may carefully heat the ends of the cord. Holding the end of the cord near the flame from a lighter or match, watch for melting to occur, then take the cord away from the flame. Do not put the cord into the flame because it can catch on fire and will turn black.

Instructions for Wrapping Hair:

  • Gather the desired amount of hair together. Wraps stay in place best if the hair is held together by an elastic band or stretchy pony tail holder - but they are not required.
  • Slide the beads that are strung on two thicknesses of cord to the bottom of the wrap (near the beads decorating the ends).
  • Place the center (folded end) of the wrap over the pony tail. Cross the cords under the pony tail and bring to the top. See Figure 2.
  • Slide the top bead up the wrap to hold the cord in place on the top of the pony tail. See Figure 3.
  • Repeat the steps above until most of the pony tail is wrapped. See Figure 4 for a detail of the hair when finished wrapping. Any extra beads can be arranged at the bottom of the wrap (in our picture, we equally space pairs of beads on the remaining length of folded cord).

Tips:

  • Our polyester cord is waxed to help prevent fraying and to help keep knots tight. When you first start sliding beads on it, it will sometimes collect little blobs of wax. This doesn't hurt anything - just discard the wax.
  • When making a hair wrap with the Thin Polyester Cord, you need beads with hole sizes around 1.5-1.6mm. Most 6/0 seed beads have holes in this range. You can also make hair wraps using other materials. For the type of Rattail Satin Cord that we carry, for example, you'll need beads with 2.2-2.4mm holes (some 1/0 seed beads have holes in this range). Greek Leather tends to be 1.5mm thick - so bead hole sizes must be close to 3mm to make a hair wrap using our leather.
